According to Türkiye's Interior Ministry, 2,264,983 Syrians were under temporary protection in June 2026, down from a peak of 3.73 million in 2021. Between 9 December 2024 and May 2026 about 640,000-670,000 people returned from Türkiye to Syria, depending on the source (UNHCR or the Turkish authorities). Many refugees in the 2023 earthquake zone still live in containers. UNHCR works from offices including Ankara and Gaziantep.
