Drought and hunger in Somalia
Repeated failed rainy seasons, conflict with al-Shabaab and the effects of the Middle East war on fuel and transport prices are deepening hunger.
Open on the interactive globeThe 2026 humanitarian plan covers 4.8 million people in need, and more than 3.8 million people are displaced by conflict, evictions, drought and floods. In May 2026 the UN confirmed a real risk of famine in Barakaba district in South West State. More than 200 health and nutrition facilities have closed for lack of funds, and nearly 1.9 million children are affected by malnutrition.
