Landmine and unexploded ordnance contamination in Tajikistan
Tajikistan is still clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance; the ICRC has worked in the country since January 1993, when it opened an office in response to the humanitarian crisis of the civil war.
Open on the interactive globeAccording to the Tajikistan National Mine Action Centre (TNMAC), 5,646,571 square metres remained to be cleared in November 2025. Between 2019 and 2025 about 8.86 million square metres were cleared and 26,319 mines and items of unexploded ordnance destroyed; 10 of 23 contaminated districts have been declared mine-free. In October 2025 an extension of the clearance deadline to 2032 was approved. The ICRC carries out mine risk education in the country.
