Since the February 2021 coup the military has fought ethnic armed organisations and the resistance movement, and airstrikes are the main cause of civilian deaths.

For 2026 the UN estimated more than 16 million people in need, and in August 2026 UNHCR counted 4.03 million internally displaced people. Between August 2025 and January 2026 the UN verified at least 702 civilian deaths, 476 of them from airstrikes. In August 2026 floods affected more than 440,000 people in 17 townships.
