Conflicts in northern Ethiopia
The 2022 Pretoria agreement is weakening, clashes in Tigray have resumed since January 2026, and tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea are rising.
Open on the interactive globeClashes between federal and Tigrayan forces intensified on 26 January 2026 near the Amhara border, and in August 2026 a drone strike on Mekelle and fighting in Western Tigray were reported. Armed violence also continues in Amhara and Oromia, while drought affects the south and east. UNICEF estimates 1.9 million internally displaced people and 1.1 million refugees in Ethiopia.
