North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri have seen fighting between armed groups for decades, and neither the M23 offensive nor the 2025 peace agreements have stopped the violence.

The 2026 humanitarian plan covers 14.9 million people in need, and 3.59 million internally displaced people live in the east of the country. In July 2026 the UN warned that fighting in South Kivu continues unabated with drones and heavy artillery, despite the December ceasefire. 26.5 million people across the country face acute hunger.
