Afghan refugees in Tajikistan and deportations

Tajikistan hosts the largest refugee population in Central Asia, almost entirely from Afghanistan; most live in Vahdat near Dushanbe and in Rudaki district.

According to UNHCR, at the end of 2025 Tajikistan hosted 8,621 refugees and 3,237 asylum-seekers. Since autumn 2024 the authorities have deported more than a thousand Afghans to Afghanistan, most of them refugees and asylum-seekers; UNHCR has called for the deportations to stop. In July 2026 human rights organisations raised the issue with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
