Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad

Eastern Chad, bordering Darfur, has received the most refugees from the war in Sudan, although it is itself one of the poorest regions in the world.

According to UNHCR, 942,954 refugees from Sudan arrived in Chad between April 2023 and 16 August 2026, and the total number of refugees and asylum seekers in the country was 1,569,233 in September 2026. At the end of August 2026 Chad hosted about 2.28 million forcibly displaced people. In August 2026 fighting in West Darfur pushed thousands more towards the border.
