Fighting and hunger in South Sudan

Fighting between government and opposition forces in Jonglei and Upper Nile overlaps with arrivals fleeing the war in Sudan and a cholera epidemic.

Between January and May 2026 fighting displaced more than 420,000 people, 324,000 of them in Jonglei, and the country has 1.99 million internally displaced people. According to the IPC, 7.8 million people, 56 percent of the population, are in Phase 3 or above, and four counties face a risk of famine. Nearly 1.3 million people have arrived from Sudan since April 2023.
