Migrants and asylum seekers in Mexico

Since January 2025 changes in US migration policy, including the closure of the CBP One app and increased deportations, have sharply reduced movement along the migration route through Central America and Mexico. Many people have become stranded in Mexico, and cities such as Mexico City have become places of longer stay rather than transit.

Doctors Without Borders reports that migrants remaining in Mexico face uncertainty, legal obstacles and difficulty accessing healthcare. In 2025 MSF provided 39,000 outpatient consultations and 8,370 individual mental health consultations in Mexico. In Ciudad Juárez MSF provided 5,629 consultations between March 2025 and January 2026, and in April 2026 refocused the project on survivors of violence, including displaced people. UNHCR (ACNUR) runs 11 offices in Mexico, including in Tapachula, Tenosique, Palenque, Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez.
