Humanitarian crisis in Iraq amid the regional war

Iraq is still dealing with the aftermath of the war against the Islamic State, and the US and Israeli war with Iran since March 2026 has disrupted trade through the Strait of Hormuz and fuel supplies.

According to FAO and partners (July 2026), about 2.5 million people need food and livelihood assistance, and about one million internally displaced people rely heavily on aid. By May 2026 about 70 percent of assessed communities reported employment disruptions, and cooking gas production fell by 45 percent. In April 2026 heavy rains killed 12 people and displaced more than 7,500, and by the end of June 219 cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever and 16 deaths had been recorded. Iraq also hosts more than 286,000 Syrian refugees.
