Cholera epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa

Floods, displacement and conflict are driving cholera in many African countries; the DRC reports the most cases and deaths, while in southern Africa the surge is fuelled by floods in Mozambique.

From 1 January to 31 May 2026, 16 countries in the WHO African Region reported 61,888 cholera cases and 1,230 deaths. The most cases were in the DRC (28,567, with 815 deaths), South Sudan (7,712), Mozambique (7,500), Nigeria (6,860), Angola (4,852) and Malawi (3,088). In southern Africa early 2026 cases were seven times higher than a year earlier, and WHO projected 12,000 to 22,000 more by August.
