Heat waves kill howler monkeys in Tabasco and Chiapas
In May 2024 a heat dome, drought and forest fires in southeastern Mexico caused a mass die-off of mantled howler monkeys.
Open on the interactive globeAccording to Semarnat, 157 dead howler monkeys were confirmed by late May 2024, and tests ruled out viruses and poisoning, pointing to heat stroke and dehydration. Temperatures in Tabasco reached 45-50 degrees Celsius, and vets in places such as Comalcalco treated animals with IV fluids and cooling. The mantled howler is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and deforestation limits access to water and shade.
