Harbour porpoise in the Baltic Proper

The Baltic Proper harbour porpoise population, the only cetacean living permanently in Polish waters, is classified as Critically Endangered.

Based on acoustic monitoring in 2011-2013, the SAMBAH project estimated 491 animals, with a 95 percent confidence interval of 71 to 1,105. HELCOM assesses that the population does not achieve good environmental status, and researchers describe it as ecologically extinct. The main threats are bycatch in fishing nets, underwater noise, contaminants and reduced prey.
