The last two northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta

The last two females of the subspecies, Najin and Fatu, live at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and its survival depends on assisted reproduction.

By April 2026 the BioRescue consortium had produced 39 pure northern white rhino embryos, including a new embryo from Fatu's egg cells. Three embryo transfers into southern white rhino surrogates in the second half of 2025 did not result in a lasting pregnancy. Two more females were introduced as potential surrogates.
