Golden lion tamarin after the yellow fever epidemic in the Atlantic Forest
The golden lion tamarin lives only in fragmented Atlantic Forest patches in Rio de Janeiro state, where yellow fever devastated it in 2016-2018.
Open on the interactive globeThe yellow fever epidemic cut the population from about 3,700 in 2014 to about 2,500 in 2018, a loss of about 32 percent. A 2022-2023 census counted about 4,800 individuals, and by October 2024 the Golden Lion Tamarin Association had vaccinated more than 480 tamarins against yellow fever. The main threats are forest fragmentation, disease and competition from invasive marmosets.
