Earthquakes in northern Venezuela

On 24 June 2026 two strong shocks of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, seconds apart, struck the densely populated coastal belt between Carabobo, Caracas and La Guaira.

According to USGS (as of 24 August 2026) at least 6,500 people were killed, and satellite imagery shows about 59,000 damaged or destroyed buildings in 7 states, La Guaira being the worst hit. Death toll estimates differ widely between sources, and the authorities reported lower figures. The IFRC runs a USD 50 million emergency appeal for 300,000 people, and FEWS NET reports Crisis-level food insecurity in five states.
