Cyclones Fytia and Gezani in Madagascar

In late January and February 2026, Cyclone Fytia (category 3) and Cyclone Gezani (category 4) struck Madagascar about 10 days apart; the city of Toamasina was hit hardest.

According to UNICEF, Cyclone Gezani affected more than 478,000 people and killed 59, and Fytia affected more than 203,000. More than 120,000 homes, 761 schools and dozens of health facilities were destroyed or damaged. In February WFP estimated 400,000 people in urgent need; its office and warehouse in Toamasina were destroyed. The IFRC runs an emergency appeal for 45,000 people until February 2027.
