Rock-ice avalanche and flood in the Bhote Koshi valley

On 26 August 2026 a section of rock wall and glacier ice broke off Langtang Lirung and triggered a debris flood that ran down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli valleys through Rasuwa district and beyond.

According to a World Weather Attribution analysis (as of 14 September 2026) more than 1,300 deaths were confirmed and more than 5,000 people remain missing; about 84,000 people in six districts were affected. Bridges, roads and hydropower plants were destroyed. The IFRC runs a USD 18 million emergency appeal.
