The population was estimated at about 5,500 in 2024, up from about 3,200 in 2010; the International Crane Foundation gives almost 7,000 birds for the eastern flyway. Threats include changes in water regime at the Poyang wintering site, oil and gas exploration in breeding areas, power lines and loss of wetlands along the flyway. The Oka Reserve has run a rare crane breeding centre since 1979, which raises Siberian cranes.
