Endangered koalas in eastern Australia

Since 2022 the koala population of Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT has been listed as Endangered under Australia's EPBC Act.

The National Koala Monitoring Program estimates the listed population in Queensland, NSW and the ACT at 86,000-176,000 animals under the adjusted 2023 model, and the national population at 287,830-628,010. Earlier data showed a 57 percent decline over 20 years in these states. Conservation groups stress that higher estimates reflect better counting methods rather than population growth.
