In April 2026 an oil slick detected 11 km off Anapa reached the beaches of Anapa and Vityazevo; according to Caucasian Knot it covered 1,200 to 1,500 square kilometres on 20 April, and in the week to 16 April more than 650 oiled birds were brought to the Zhemchuzhnaya rehabilitation centre. In the same month drone attacks on the Tuapse refinery caused oil products to leak into the Tuapse river and the sea, black rain and mass bird deaths; by 25 May more than 32,000 cubic metres of contaminated soil had been removed, and the state of emergency was lifted at the end of June 2026. After the 2024 disaster the Delfa research centre recorded dead dolphins on beaches near Anapa.
