Amur tiger in north-east China

East Asia, Jilin and Heilongjiangsince 2017

Only 25 years ago fewer than a dozen wild Amur tigers lived in China. Since 2017 they have been protected by Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, which connects with Russia's Land of the Leopard National Park.

According to China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the number of wild tigers in the park rose from 27 in 2017 to 72 according to data published in July 2026; 21 tigers regularly cross the border with Russia. In November 2025 camera traps recorded a tigress with five cubs for the first time in China. Poachers' snares, forest fragmentation, prey scarcity and conflict with residents remain threats; in 2025 WCS removed snares and trained community patrols around Hunchun.
