Manaro Voui volcano activity on Ambae Island

Since February 2026 Manaro Voui on Ambae has stayed at alert level 3, and acid rain reached Santo, Malakula, Pentecost and Ambrym. On 25 August 2026 it sent an ash plume to about 15 km.

According to the IFRC, since 25 August 2026 people in south, west and north Ambae and north Pentecost report increasing ashfall on crops and water storage and gas emissions; 15,180 people are affected. Ambae has about 11,000 residents and no safe high ground away from the volcano; the whole island was evacuated in 2017-2018. Penama provincial authorities have prepared evacuation plans, and the Vanuatu Red Cross is responding with IFRC support.
