Hurricanes Lala, Lowell and Nolo in Hawaii

In August and September 2026 Hawaii was hit by a series of tropical cyclones. Hurricane Lala grazed the southern part of the Big Island (Hawaiʻi) in mid-August, and in early September Hurricane Lowell caused flooding and damage on Kauaʻi. On 25 September the approaching Hurricane Nolo threatened the Big Island and Maui.

According to Wikipedia, Lala caused 4 deaths (3 direct and 1 indirect), damaged or destroyed more than 100 homes and caused an estimated USD 81.4 million in damage; on 25 August 2026 the President approved a federal disaster declaration for the Big Island. In the Kaʻū district a destroyed section of Highway 11 cut off Pāhala, and some residents depended on helicopter deliveries. After Hurricane Lowell about 33,000 customers on Kauaʻi lost power and about 200 buildings were damaged or destroyed. The American Red Cross ran shelters and distributed food, water and relief supplies, and before Nolo arrived it deployed nearly 100 responders to the Big Island. Forecasts for Nolo called for 15-30 inches of rain on the Big Island and a risk of catastrophic flooding.
