Western Alaska recovery after the Halong storm

In October 2025 the remnants of Typhoon Halong struck the coast of western Alaska. Water levels exceeded records by about 2 feet in Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, Yup'ik villages in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. On 22 October 2025 the President approved a federal disaster declaration.

According to the state emergency management division, across 52 communities 208 homes were destroyed, 471 suffered major damage and 389 minor damage; in Kipnuk more than 90 percent of structures were damaged. More than 1,600 people were displaced. Over the 2025/2026 winter more than 670 residents, mostly from Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, stayed in Anchorage, and in late February 2026 more than 300 were still in hotels; the state expected many would be unable to return home in summer 2026. By 25 August 2026 the Alaska Community Foundation fund had deployed more than USD 7.4 million for relief and recovery, including USD 750,000 for home building in 11 communities. In September 2026 FEMA was still offering rental assistance to affected households.
