Forest fires in Yakutia, Krasnoyarsk Krai and Yamal 2026

A vast anticyclone over the taiga and forest tundra of Yakutia, Krasnoyarsk Krai and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in July and August 2026 favoured fires; in Krasnoyarsk Krai stands killed by a Siberian silk moth outbreak added fuel.

According to Avialesookhrana data, about 5 million hectares had burned in Russia by 27 August 2026, and about 6.2 million hectares according to a 7 September compilation. In Yakutia a state of emergency was in force from 10 July to 14 September 2026: 539 fires were recorded on more than 2 million hectares in 32 districts, and on 27 August smoke reached Yakutsk. In Krasnoyarsk Krai an emergency was declared on 10 June, more than 1,600 fires were recorded, and in September a new emergency was declared in Turukhansk district. In the second half of September most active fires were in Yamal.
