Spring 2026 floods in Dagestan

Record rainfall on 28-30 March and 4-5 April 2026, brought by a cyclone over the Caspian Sea, flooded Makhachkala, Derbent, Khasavyurt and other municipalities of Dagestan; on 5 April the dam of the Gedzhukh reservoir in Derbent district failed.

Six people died and more than 4,000 were evacuated after the dam failure. At the peak more than 327,000 people were left without electricity, more than a thousand homes were flooded, and on 9 April the situation was declared a federal emergency. By 1 May 248,845 compensation claims had been filed, of which 10,900 had been paid. Chechnya was also affected. Aid was collected by organisations including the Dagestani Nadezhda Foundation and ADRA.
