Winter 2025-2026 in Mongolia: dzud and snowstorm

A dzud is a severe winter in which livestock die in large numbers because the ground is frozen or covered with snow. Herding is one of the pillars of Mongolia's economy, and almost 40 percent of the nomadic population depends on it.

In January 2026 dzud conditions affected at least 11 of the 21 provinces, and more than 26,300 animals died in Uvs, Bayan-Ölgii, Zavkhan and Övörkhangai. On 21-24 February a snowstorm with winds of up to 31 m/s and temperatures down to -48 C hit 16 provinces: 5 people died, 56 were injured, more than 4,900 animals died and over 28,000 were reported missing. The IFRC released DREF funding for 3,700 people, implemented by the Mongolian Red Cross until June 2026.
