Wildfires in the Mediterranean basin

Record heat and drought in summer 2026 favoured large wildfires from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkans and the Maghreb.

GDACS recorded more than a dozen orange-alert fires, including a July fire in central Spain (about 66,000 ha, more than 20,000 residents in the burned area) and large fires in Portugal, Greece and Serbia. In Algeria 18 people died in two waves of fires in July and August, and in Tunisia about 12,000 ha burned at temperatures close to 50 degrees C. The IFRC released DREF funding for both countries.
