Aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka

In late November 2025 Cyclone Ditwah dropped a month's rainfall in a few days; floods and more than 200 major landslides hit all 25 districts, worst of all the central highlands.

The UN reports more than 640 people killed, 2.2 million affected at the peak and 113,000 homes damaged or destroyed. The UN Humanitarian Priorities Plan closed on 11 June 2026 after reaching 575,000 people; the government's needs assessment puts recovery at USD 3.4 billion. The IFRC emergency appeal runs until the end of 2027, and UNICEF and Save the Children continue support in Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya districts.
