Aftermath of the forest fires in North and South Gyeongsang

The forest fires of March 2025, the worst in South Korea's history, burned about 104,800 ha, mainly in Uiseong and Andong counties. 32 people died and more than 37,800 had to leave their homes.

4,015 houses, 1,914 farm and livestock facilities and seven temples burned, including the historic Gounsa temple. In June 2026, 3,551 people from 2,085 households were still living in temporary modular homes in Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, Yeongdeok and Uiseong, and the provincial government extended their right to stay until the first half of 2027. In July 2026 heavy rain flooded some of the fire survivors' temporary homes, including in Andong. According to the National Institute of Forest Science, structural recovery of the forests will take more than 30 years.
