Record mudflow and flood season in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan

Heavy rainfall, earlier snow and glacier melt and settlement in hazardous valleys meant that Kyrgyzstan recorded 348 mudflows in the first half of 2026, the highest number in 30-40 years.

According to Kyrgyzstan's Emergencies Ministry, 8 people died in the first half of 2026 and losses were estimated at 399 million som; Batken, Jalal-Abad, Osh and Talas regions were worst hit. In late May floods and mudflows damaged more than 400 homes in Osh, Kara-Suu and Manas, and in July a mudflow in Nooken district flooded 466 houses. In Tajikistan a flood in Kulob in early May killed 3 people and affected about 850 homes, and a July mudflow in Ayni district damaged 66 houses in the villages of Darg and Kazdon. The IFRC released two DREF allocations for the Red Crescent Societies of both countries.
