Recovery of the Noto Peninsula after the 2024 earthquake

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake of 1 January 2024 and subsequent heavy rain destroyed or damaged more than 165,000 homes, about 70 percent of them in Ishikawa Prefecture. Rising material costs and labour shortages are slowing reconstruction.

According to Jiji Press, by the end of 2025 228 people had died directly and 470 from indirect causes, including health deterioration during evacuation. In July 2026 more than 17,000 people were living in temporary housing in Ishikawa Prefecture, and the population of four Oku-Noto municipalities had fallen by more than 13 percent. Construction of public housing has only just begun. NGOs run community spaces and health support for residents of temporary housing in Suzu, Wajima and Noto.
