Kumamoto Prefecture earthquake

On 28 July 2026 at 16:27 local time a shallow earthquake of magnitude 7.1 on the JMA scale (6.8 according to USGS), centred about 5 km east of Uto, reached the highest level, 7, on the Japanese seismic intensity scale.

According to a Japanese Red Cross report of 7 September 2026, 38 people died, 1,796 homes were completely destroyed and 30,985 partially damaged. Most deaths occurred in Yatsushiro, where a paper mill chimney collapsed, and in Kashima, where a shopping centre partly collapsed and exploded. On 3 September about 2,000 people were still staying in 38 shelters, and the Red Cross warned that their health was deteriorating.
