Anak Krakatau eruption (Sunda Strait) 2026

Activity at the volcano in the Sunda Strait has been rising since July 2026, and on 4-6 September an eruption lasted about 25 hours.

Ash fell on Lampung, Banten, West Java and Jakarta; the IFRC reports more than 1 million people affected by ashfall, with no casualties or building damage. Several airports closed and tens of thousands of travellers were stranded. The volcano remains at alert level III, with a 3 km exclusion zone around the crater.
