Agricultural drought in East Africa

After a poor March-May 2026 rainy season, June-September rainfall in central and northeastern Ethiopia, eastern South Sudan and Sudan is below average according to FEWS NET, and in parts of the region June was among the driest on record.

GDACS maintains an orange agricultural drought alert over about 753,000 km2 in eight countries, with anomalies typical of severe to extreme events. The drought deepens conflict-driven food crises: FEWS NET expects widespread Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse outcomes and a credible risk of Famine in parts of Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia. Above-average October-December rainfall is forecast for Somalia, Kenya and Uganda.
