Canada's 2026 wildfire season

Canada's 2026 wildfire season began in May, and in July and August the most intense fires affected southern British Columbia (the Fraser Canyon and the Okanagan Valley) and northwestern Ontario.

According to the Government of Canada, 4,793 fires had been recorded and 4.1 million hectares had burned by mid-August 2026, with 582 fires active and 31 out of control. In British Columbia more than 10,000 people were under evacuation orders, and on 18 July the Canadian Armed Forces evacuated the Eabametoong First Nation in Ontario. The Canadian Red Cross provided emergency lodging and psychosocial support, and in the recovery phase it runs support sites in Vernon and Summerland and provides assistance to households whose homes were destroyed.
