Drought in Central America during El Niño

A strong El Niño, which WMO says is almost certain to last until February 2027, brings below-average rainfall and high temperatures to Central America's Dry Corridor, where households have suffered several years of crop losses.

Since April 2026 GDACS has maintained an orange agricultural drought alert in eight countries of the region. FEWS NET reports persistent Crisis-level food insecurity in the Dry Corridor and the Guatemalan highlands and a risk of further harvest losses. In August and September 2026 the IFRC released DREF funding for drought in Honduras.
