Since March 2026 a rainfall deficit, deepened by the developing El Niño, has caused extreme drought on the Altiplano and in the valleys of Oruro, Chuquisaca, Potosí and La Paz.

In Chuquisaca 18 of 20 municipalities declared an emergency or disaster, with about 30,000 families and more than 91,000 ha of crops affected (as of July 2026). By late August 26 municipalities nationwide were under an emergency or red alert and the drought covered 6 of the 9 departments. Several municipalities are trucking in water, and SENAMHI forecasts a very strong El Niño with no rainfall in the last quarter of the year, raising the risk of fires in the Chiquitania and the Amazon.
